Statement on accessibility
Kiel University (CAU) makes special effort to ensure that its website is accessible in accordance with the national legal provisions on implementing the Directive (EU) 2016/2102 of the European Parliament and of the Council.
This declaration on accessibility applies to the website of Kiel University including the content that can be accessed via the web content management systems (WCMS) provided centrally by the university.
Status of compatibility with the requirements
The website is partially compatible with Section 11 (1) of the State Disability Equality Act (LBGG) and the accessibility requirements in accordance with Section 13 (3) LBGG.
Non-accessible content
- PDF downloads: Due to the large number of documents, it has not yet been possible to convert these into an accessible format. If they are necessary for active administrative procedures, they will be gradually revised to make them accessible.
- Subtitles: Embedded videos do not always have readable subtitles. For new, embedded videos that we have produced ourselves, we endeavour to provide subtitles as soon as possible after publication. The need to provide readable subtitles is an integral part of our training concept for new editorial team members.
- Alternative texts: Not all images used have an alternative text. The provision of meaningful alternative texts is a fixed requirement.

- Alternative texts: Not all images used have an alternative text. The setting of meaningful alternative texts is an integral part of our training concept for new editorial team members.
- Headings: Not all pages have meaningful and semantically correct headings. The semantically correct labelling of heading hierarchies is an integral part of our training concept for new editorial team members.
- Special characters: Special characters are used in texts on individual web pages in order to meet the requirements of diversity-sensitive language. The use of special characters in texts can represent a barrier for various user groups. We are closely following the debate on the compatibility of the use of special characters in the context of diversity-sensitive language and accessibility requirements.
- Tables: Not all tables used are correctly labelled. Correct labelling and the correct use of tables is an integral part of our training concept for new editorial team members.
- - Links with the same name: There may be identical links on individual web pages. This is partly due to the automatic creation of these links. Even with editorially placed links, identical links on a page cannot always be avoided. In such cases, however, we endeavour to provide alternative information that can be read accordingly. Pointing out the necessity of speaking links in terms of accessibility is an integral part of our training concept for new members of the editorial team.
- Contrasts: Not all areas of our website meet the minimum requirements for contrasts, e.g. some colour combinations for headlines and backgrounds. When redesigning individual sections, we explicitly ensure that the contrast values are compatible with the minimum requirements.
- Keyboard operability: Not all sections of our website can be fully operated using the keyboard; in some cases, for example, the size of the focus field does not meet the minimum requirements. This mainly affects very old sections of our website.Following the redesign of individual sections, these shortcomings have been rectified for these sections.
The Kiel University's website is very extensive and in most cases the editorial work is decentralised.Raising the awareness of editorial staff for the creation of accessible websites is an ongoing task that is actively pursued, for example, as part of our training concept.
