Welcome to the website of the Infrastructure Priority Programme “SPP 1006 - ICDP” of the German Research Foundation

The Coordination Office for the Infrastructure Priority Programme 'SPP 1006 ICDP' of the German Research Foundation (DFG) coordinates and supports the scientific activities that take place at German institutes within the framework of the International Continental Scientific Drilling Programme (ICDP). The following pages contain information on projects and the application process as well as news and activities within the framework of the DFG “SPP 1006 - ICDP”.

What does “SPP 1006 - ICDP”?

Much progress has been made in recent years in the conceptual understanding of the evolution of the Earth's continental crust and the Earth's palaeoclimate. A better understanding of the processes acting in the Earth's crust and their interaction with the atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and geosphere is essential for the management of Earth's environment, resources, and natural hazards. Among the various technical advances, scientific drilling is one of the most invaluable tools of modern geosciences and related disciplines.

The International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) is the platform for continental scientific drilling. Key topics to be addressed include Geodynamic Processes, Geohazards, Georesources and Environmental Change. To date, the ICDP remains an outstanding and highly successful earth science programme, achieving world-class science with global impact.

The DFG Infrastructure Priority Programme SPP 1006 ‘ICDP’ is the basis for the significant participation of scientists based in Germany in international drilling campaigns. The main research questions addressed in the DFG SPP 1006 ‘ICDP’ are summarized in the ICDP-Science Plan 2020-2030. A key strength of the SPP is that it provides support in all phases of a drilling project such as pilot studies to assess the drilling potential of selected sites, designated site characterisation studies, participation in drilling projects, state-of-the-art investigations using ICDP drilling data and samples, innovative experimental techniques for long-term measurements, and post-drilling research.

The SPP 1006 ‚ICDP‘ coordination office coordinates and supports the scientific activities that take place at German institutes as part of the ICDP.  On the following pages you will find information on the SPP 1006 ‘ICDP’, how to submit proposals for research projects in connection with ICDP projects within the framework of the DFG SPP 1006, on running and completed DFG research projects, their scientific output as well as planned colloquia and workshops.
